The first week was challenging. Rain after leaving San Francisco forced Pat into two motels, and heavy snow in the Tahoe region required him to find a different route over the mountains. He also got his first flat. He’s finally out of California and on a dirt portion of the Pony Express Trail in Nevada.

Highlight: A thrilling 10-mile descent from Spooner Summit in CA to Carson City, NV, hitting 25-35 mph. "I was giddy with tears in my eyes."
Lowlight: Heavy car traffic and no shoulder in Tahoe on the reroute to the Pony Express Trail


This week, he ate:

  • 2 blueberry scones

  • 1 bag of dehydrated pineapple

  • 2 giant veggie burritos

  • 3 energy bars

  • 1 bag of dehydrated mango

  • 2 mandarin oranges

  • 3 Mexican pastries

  • 1.5 jars of peanut butter

  • coconut milk butter bread

  • Bin-bin rice crackers

  • 1 veggie burger

  • French fries (2 servings)

  • Lentil and sausage soup

  • 3 bags of potato chips

  • 2 King-size Baby Ruth bars

  • 1 can of refried beans

  • 2 sesame seed bagels

  • 2 yogurts

  • 1 apple

  • 1 medium sausage pizza

  • 1 cup of pistachios

  • 1 large protein cookie
